383-001 Mol-Vyne Shop Primer
3. Product Description
Mol-Vyne Shop Primer is a single component preconstruction primer.
Use as a shop primer or prefabrication primer for protection of blast-cleaned
steel in the period between cleaning and final painting.
4. Product Features
» May be used on ferrous metal
and aluminium.
» Rust-inhibitive - excellent corrosion
resistance.
» Fast dry
» May be top coated with heavy-duty
coatings an excellent tie coat.
» Chromate and lead free.
» Weldable shop primer.
5. Product Limitations
Do not use for immersion or direct food contact
service. Do not use in Type A - Aggressively Corrosive environments.
May be used in a Type C-Corrosive environments only if top coated
with a product suitable for the environment (such as epoxy, vinyl,
etc.). Will withstand 93° C (200° F), continuous dry heat.
The color may change as this limit is approached, but the film will
remain intact.

7. Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of
all contaminants.
Ferrous Metal
Remove dirt and dust. Remove oil and grease with
solvents such as mineral spirits or xylene in compliance with SSPC-SP1-82
Solvent Cleaning. Further clean the surface by one of the following
methods depending upon the service environment. See ASTM D2200.
Type C-Corrosive
This exposure is characterized by moderately
aggressive chemical fumes, mists or dusts that combine with moisture
and high humidity to corrode zinc at rates less than one mil per year.
Type A-Aggressively Corrosive exposures may in some instances, become
Type C exposures outside a radius of about 50 yards from the sources
of contamination for a limited further distance. For Type C-Corrosive
environments. Near-White Sandblasting SSPC-SP10 is recommended.
Type M-Moderate
This exposure is generally outdoors and is characterized by normal
weathering and/or moderate concentrations of chemical fumes that combines
with humidity and condensed moisture to corrode steel at rates less
than three miles per year. Zinc in this exposures is virtually free
of corrosion. Light to moderate chemical fume concentrations in indoorareas
without excessive humidity may produced similar conditions. For Type
M-Moderate environments, Commercial Blast Cleaning SSPC-SP6 is recommended.
Where exposure is normal weathering only, Brush-Off Blast Cleaning
SSPC-SP7 or power Tool Cleaning SSPC-SPC will excellent service.
Type P-Protected (Architectural)
Surface are generally indoors in the normal humidity
range and are not subjected to chemical contaminants which will attack
paint or steel. For Type P-Protected environments, Brush-Off Blast
Cleaning SSPC-SP7, Power Tool Cleaning SSPC-SP3, or Hand Tool Cleaning
SSPC-SP2 will provide the sound substrate needed for primer adhesion.
Aluminum Surface
Remove oil, grease, dirt, dust and chemical contaminants
using the prescribed cleaning methods. To obtain proper adhesion use
No. 27301 Vinyl Wash Primer or alternatively scuff and solvent wash.
See ASTM D2200 "Aluminium" for more information.
Previously Painted Surface
Hard or glossy finished should be dulled by sanding,
sandblasting or other abrasive method to ensure adhesion. Clean thoroughly.
Remove any loose old coating. Spot prime any exposed non-metal substrate
with a primer recommended for the substrate. If more than 25% of the
previous coating has failed, if the previous coating can be easily
scraped off the surface, or if a test application of the product lifts
or wrinkles the previous coatings, it should be completely removed.
8. Application
Apply by spray (airless or conventional). DO NOT apply if surface
temperature is below 10° C (50° F).
9. Spray Application
Airless Spray
Fluid tip: 617
Pressure 1500-1800 Psi
10. Drying
Dries to touch in 2minutes, to handle in 30 minutes, to re-coat in
1 hour, to full cure in 8 hours at 20°C (70°F) 50% R.H. Allow
longer drying times under cooler or more humid conditions.
11. Clean-up
Clean all equipment immediately after use with methyl ethyl ketone.
12. Top Coats
May be top coated with epoxy, urethane, vinyl and chlorinated rubber
coatings as well as conventional oil, alkyd and latex product.
Warning: Flammable, harmful if inhaled, causes
irritation.
Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Vapors may cause flash fire.
Do not breath vapors or spray mist. Do not get in the eyes, or skin
or clothing. War appropriate, properly fitted respirator (NOISH/MSHA
approved) during and after application unless air monitoring demonstrates
vapor/mist levels are below applicable limits. Follow respirator manufacturer's
directions for respirator use.
First Aid: In case of skin contact
Wash thoroughly with soap and water. For Eyes,
flush immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes. Call a physician,
if inhaled, move to fresh air. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably mouth-to-mouth,
if breathing is difficult, give oxygen, and call a physician. Keep
containers closed. In case of spillage, absorb and then dispose of
in accordance with local applicable regulations.
Use only with adequate ventilation. Keep out
of reach of children.
Notice: Reports have associated repeated
and prolonged occupational over-exposure to solvents with permanent
brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misused by deliberately
concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful or fatal.
